Vertical territory is one of the most important environmental enrichments for indoor cats. Cats that can climb, observe from height, and move around a space three-dimensionally show significantly lower stress behaviours than those limited to floor level. Wall shelves deliver this in a way that suits modern homes — no floor-to-ceiling cat tree taking up the corner of your living room.
Planning the Layout
Think of it as designing a route, not installing individual shelves. The cat needs to be able to get up, move across, and get down without retracing their steps. Key principles:
- Entry and exit points: Always provide at least two ways off the wall system — usually steps or a ramp from the floor, and a connection to a piece of furniture (sofa back, bookshelf top)
- Step height: Space shelves no more than 12–18 inches apart vertically for comfortable jumping. Elderly or less agile cats need shorter steps
- Width: Minimum 10 inches wide; wider is better for resting (lounging vs. perching)
- Window access: Route at least one shelf to a window — this dramatically increases the system's use
Installation Basics
Every shelf must be anchored into wall studs or use appropriate wall anchors rated for the weight (cat + shelf + dynamic load from jumping). A shelf that pulls from the wall mid-jump is dangerous. Use a stud finder, or err on the side of more fixings. Floating shelf brackets rated for 30+ lbs per bracket are appropriate for most single-cat setups.
Surface Materials

Introduction
Don't expect instant use. Place treats on each level during the first week. Let the cat discover the system in their own time — forced introduction creates negative associations. Most cats are using their wall system confidently within 2 weeks.
